[ARCHIVED] Public Notice: City Requires Street and Right-of-Way Excavation Permit

This is a reminder that the excavation of any street, alley, right-of-way, or public property within the corporate limits of Cookeville requires an excavation permit.

The Street and Right-of-Way Excavation Permit can be obtained from the City’s Public Works Department. Any excavation done without this required permit is unlawful.  All excavation work must continue to comply with the Cookeville Municipal Code (Excavations and Cuts, Sections 16-501 through 16-510).

Additionally, the open cutting of a public street or alley is only allowed when a directional bore is deemed incapable of the task . Anyone seeking to open cut a public street or alley must first gain approval from the City's Public Works Director. Requests to open cut may also be reviewed by the City's Utility Department.

This permit process applies to all individuals, firms, corporations, associations, utility companies, telecommunications companies, and other entities.

The word "excavation" refers to any excavating, cutting, tunneling, boring, or similar activity that disturbs, or could disturb, any street, alley, right-of-way, or other public property in Cookeville.

For questions about the permit process, contact the City of Cookeville's Public Works Department at 931-520-5249.
