The City of Cookeville is making significant improvements along North Jefferson Avenue from East 1st Street to Boyd Street.
This project includes the removal and replacement of the sidewalk on the western side of the street along with resurfacing and restriping of this section of roadway. These changes will enhance accessibility and safety along the street.
City workers began the project last week with the removal of the old sidewalk which had become impassable due to tree roots. Workers also removed a large tree stump which jutted out from the old sidewalk. The stumps removal will create space for two additional angled parking spaces along the street.
Workers will be back on North Jefferson Avenue this week to complete further sections of the sidewalk. Vehicles should proceed with caution when approaching the 1st Street and North Jefferson Avenue intersections.
When the project is completed, the new sidewalk will be 6-foot wide and feature ADA compliant ramps at each intersection.
In the coming months, the City will begin resurfacing and restriping of this same stretch of North Jefferson Avenue. Along with the newly enlarged sidewalks, the newly resurfaced street will have angled parking on each side.
