The Cookeville Police Department (CPD) and Algood Police Department (APD) completed installations of upgraded radio communication systems this week.
The systems were funded by a collaborative grant from the State of Tennessee’s Violent Crime Intervention Fund (VCIF). The two departments worked together to secure funding for the purchase of 229 Motorola APX series radios.
The new radios include 108 portable radios, which have been issued to officers across the two police departments, and 121 mobile radios for police vehicles. Installation of the mobile radios was finished this week.
“The upgraded system offers several benefits to the department,” says Randy Evans, Cookeville’s Chief of Police. “It allows us to communicate seamlessly with all law enforcement within Putnam County as well as with other jurisdictions.”
“Most importantly,” Evans continues, “it improves coverage and sound quality compared to our old system. These improvements enhance officer safety and our level of service to the community.“
The Putnam County Sherriff’s Office received a similar grant in partnership with the Monterey and Baxter police departments. With the five law enforcement agencies all operating on similarly upgraded radio systems, communication between the agencies is now more effective than ever.
