Cookeville’s streetlights are better and brighter than ever. Carl Haney, director of the Cookeville Energy Department, reports that more than 76% of Cookeville’s streetlights have been upgraded to LED bulbs as part of an ongoing project from the City.
City officials anticipate the new bulbs to be more energy and cost efficient than the ones previously used. According to the Energy Department, LED bulbs typically last 3 to 5 times longer than the former high-pressure sodium variety. They also tend to consume anywhere from 50 to 75% less energy.
Along with reduced costs and energy usage, the new lights are expected to increase road visibility and safety at night. The LEDs produce a more balanced broad-spectrum light allowing for greater illumination and visibility. Greater visibility means improved safety for both drivers and pedestrians on Cookeville’s streets.
The upgrade to LED streetlights has been an ongoing project for the City since 2020. The Energy Department expects the project to be completed by the end of 2025.
