[ARCHIVED] Memorial Day concert: Big Band Sound at Dogwood Park

Big Band Sound at Dogwood Park

COOKEVILLE – The stage is set for an evening of swing tunes and dancing at Dogwood Park.

Big Band Sound will be performing a Memorial Day concert at 7 p.m. Admission is free.

“Dancing will be available on the lawn directly in front of the stage,” Chad McDonald, Cookeville Leisure Services cultural arts superintendent, said. “We encourage anyone who loves to dance to attend.”

Big Band Sound, which plays music from the 1940s, 50s and 60s, is performing in place of the much larger Cookeville Community Band, which has traditionally opened its summer season with a Memorial Day concert. The change is due to COVID concerns.

“This smaller group allows for additional space on stage, and we are thrilled to be able to offer this alternate group on a holiday when everyone likes to come to the park for a concert,” McDonald said.

Big Band Sound includes local musicians, some of whom play with the Cookeville Community Band, on saxophones, trumpets, trombones, piano, bass and drums.

“Bring a lawn chair and enjoy a great evening of music in the beautiful setting of Dogwood Park,” McDonald said.

More Big Band Sound concerts are scheduled for June 14, Aug. 16 and Sept. 6.

Other free concerts to be held at Dogwood Park include the Third Thursday in the Park series (June 17, July 15, Aug. 19), Cookeville Community Band (July 5, July 19, Aug. 2) and Bryan Symphony Orchestra (Sept. 5).

Concessions are available.

Dogwood Park is located at 30 E. Broad St. For more information about free summer concerts, call 931-528-1313.
