[ARCHIVED] Historic preservation topic of Nov. 2 lecture at Cookeville City Hall

Mark Dudney will speak on historic preservation

COOKEVILLE – Concerned about the future of this area’s historic buildings and sites?

Join Mark Dudney, historic preservation planner with the Upper Cumberland Development District, as he presents “Historic Preservation in the Upper Cumberland” Nov. 2 at 10:30 a.m. in the Cookeville City Hall council chambers, 45 E. Broad St.

The lecture, presented by Friends of the Cookeville History Museum as part of the Heritage Lecture Series, is intended to be entertaining and informative. Admission is free.

“Given the recent demolition of well-known and beloved local historic properties, some seemingly without warning, citizens who are truly concerned about the preservation of local treasures have felt like their hands are tied and nothing can be done,” Beth Thompson, Cookeville museums manager, said. “Mr. Dudney will share proactive steps that can be taken in identifying and saving those spots that are dear to our hometown hearts.”

A reception will follow. Refreshments will be served.

“There was a time when our very own Cookeville Depot was on the chopping block, and a group of concerned citizens saved it from demolition,” Thompson added. “At the same time, we have lost some very dear properties such as the Princess Theatre. Mr. Dudney’s lecture will show success stories in our area that prove preservation is attainable.”
