COOKEVILLE – The contributions of area nurses are being highlighted in a new exhibit at the Cookeville History Museum.

“Celebrating Nursing in the Upper Cumberland” opens Saturday with a reception from 1-3 p.m. Admission is free.

“Last year, a group of local nurses contacted us about the possibility of an exhibit celebrating the awesome job done by nurses in our community to culminate during National Nurses Week, May 6-12,” Beth Thompson, Cookeville museums manager, said. “We thought it was a wonderful idea and designated a planning committee that included Rebecca Tolbert, Colleen Childress and Jean Davis, along with our museum staff.”

The exhibit features a variety of nursing items, mostly from the mid- to late 20th Century, including uniforms, documents and medical equipment. The items were loaned to the museum by area nurses and Megan Atkinson of the Tennessee Tech Archives.

Pam Philpot, museum exhibit specialist, said she hopes the exhibit will increase awareness and respect for the hard work and determination of area nurses.

“The scope of opportunities for what nurses can do is wide, and we have nursing professionals in every aspect of the field right here in the Upper Cumberland,” she said.

“Celebrating Nursing in the Upper Cumberland” continues through May 11 at 40 E. Broad St. Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. For more information, call 931-520-5455.
