COOKEVILLE – It’s the “purr-fect” class for cat lovers.

Kitten Yoga, presented by Cookeville Leisure Services and the Cookeville-Putnam County Animal Shelter, will be Aug. 25 from 10-10:45 a.m. (with an overflow class 11-11:45 a.m.) at the Cane Creek Recreation Center.

“We are thrilled to offer this class,” Jen Webb, Leisure Services special programs coordinator, said. “Exercise doesn’t have to look like one specific model. It is nice to show people you can do something good for your body and it doesn’t have to feel like work. It is good for the kitties too.”

Kittens for the class, all of which are adoptable, will be brought by the Animal Shelter. (Participants should not bring their own cats.)

“You will be able to interact with the kitties as much as you desire,” Webb said. “Instructor Wanda Lemons will incorporate some poses the kitties can be a part of or you can just watch them tumble around the room. It is completely up to you.”

Anyone wishing to adopt one of the kittens may do so at the Animal Shelter.

Shelter volunteer Lauren Shibakov said Kitten Yoga is a great way for participants to reach their Zen in a less conventional way.

“Scientists have determined that the effects of just petting a cat can be tremendous, including lowering blood pressure, anxiety and stress levels,” she said. “Plus, these kittens are all from the Animal Shelter and are rarely awarded the opportunity out to play.”

Shelter volunteer Brittany Robbins agreed that the experience will be positive for both the kittens and the participants.

“It will expose the kittens to a new, more relaxed environment outside of the shelter,” she said. “It’ll also give the community a chance to interact with them outside of their enclosed condos.”

The cost is $10 for ages 13 and up and $5 for children ages 5-12. A portion of the fee will be donated to the Animal Shelter.

“For animal lovers it’s a win-win,” Webb said.

The Cane Creek Recreation Center is located at 180 C C Camp Road. For more information or to register for Kitten Yoga, call 931-526-7393.
