[ARCHIVED] Construction Prompts Lane Closures on South Jefferson Avenue/State Route 136 in Cookeville

Drivers traveling along SR 136 (South Jefferson Avenue) in Cookeville should be aware of upcoming road construction activities that will impact traffic. As part of the 2.3-mile project to widen and improve SR 136 from I-40 to SR 111, Tennessee Department of Transportation contract crews will implement lane closures on South Jefferson Avenue in both directions near the I-40 interchange beginning Wednesday, August 13, 2025, and continuing through October 31, 2025.

Traveling North on South Jefferson Avenue:

  • Roadway reduced to one lane from Williams Enterprise Drive through Bunker Hill Road to the I-40 East overpass
  • Left turns onto Bunker Hill Road and right turns onto the I-40 East entrance ramp will remain open
  • Jefferson Avenue returns to two lanes after passing the I-40 East overpass

Traveling South on South Jefferson Avenue:

  • Roadway reduced to one lane beginning at the I-40 West overpass
  • One through lane will continue through the I-40 East intersection and Bunker Hill Road
  • A temporary right-turn lane to Bunker Hill Road will be available
  • Left turns onto the I-40 East entrance ramp will remain open
  • Traffic will remain in one lane through the project limits

Motorists are encouraged to use caution and expect delays in the area. This work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled in case of inclement weather or other unforeseen conditions.

As always, motorists are reminded to use TDOT’s motorist information tools and Know Before You Go! by checking travel conditions before departure. Drivers should never tweet, text, or talk on the phone while driving. For the latest updates, visit the TDOT SmartWay Map or dial 511 for statewide travel information.

Tennessee’s Move Over Law requires drivers to move over for highway workers and emergency vehicles. Violating this law can result in up to 30 days in jail and a fine of up to $500.
