[ARCHIVED] Major Softball Tournament Brings in Teams from Across the Nation

Cookeville is hosting the Mojo Moneyball Classic fastpitch softball tournament this Sunday, June 16.

This highly competitive softball tournament brings 43 youth teams to Cookeville from across the country. Players will compete across three age divisions: 14 and up, 16 and up, and 18 and up. Despite their young ages, these players take the game very seriously.

“These are some of the best youth softball players in the country,” explains Seth Bruton, Athletic Superintendent for Cookeville’s Department of Leisure Services. “Many of the players already have offers or commitments to play on the highest level of college teams.”

Tournament games begin at 8 a.m. on June 16, but pre-tournament activities will begin Thursday, June 13, with a prospect camp where players will be evaluated and potentially recruited by college coaches.

On Friday and Saturday, June 14 and 15, tournament players will participate in pool games to determine their ranking and placement in the tournament. Both the tournament and pool games are free and open to the public.

Leisure Services expects this to be one of the biggest tournaments hosted at the Sportsplex this year. The event is anticipated to bring 1500-2000 people to Cookeville over the next four days.

“This is a great event to showcase the city of Cookeville to people from around the country,” says Bruton. “We’re excited about the potential economic impact this will have for our city and county.”

Tournament games will begin at 8 a.m. on June 16 and continue until the last game is played around 5 p.m. Pool games are June 14 and 15 from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. All tournament and pool games are free and open to the public.
