The City of Cookeville is currently accepting applications for budget billing on city utilities. Residents may apply in-person at the Customer Service Desk located in Cookeville City Hall. Applications must be submitted before the end of May to qualify.
The budget billing program helps utility users better manage their monthly budgets by offering a consistent monthly utility payment. It is also a great way to minimize the financial impact of high-usage months by spreading the cost out across the entire year.
Under the budget billing program, city residents can arrange their utility payments into 11 equal monthly installments. The twelfth and final monthly payment of the year is adjusted either upward or downward based on the remaining balance on the utility account. The payment amount for the initial 11 months of budget billing is determined by the customer's average utility usage from the previous year.
The twelfth payment compares the total paid over the year against the account’s actual utility use. Any remaining costs will be paid in the twelfth installment. If the amount paid in the first 11 months exceeds the amount owed for the year, the account holder can choose to have the excess amount refunded or pay it towards their next utility bill.
