[ARCHIVED] "Launch Day" Opens Jan. 19 at CPAC

A barroom brawl between two men in the future.

Robot arms, space colonization, and computer chip implants…life sure looks different in the year 2108.

“Launch Day (Love Stories from the Year 2108)” is a futuristic exploration of humanity. Through a series of two-actor scenes, the characters of “Launch Day” struggle to navigate life and love in a perilous, high-tech future.

“I was drawn to Launch Day because it imagines what six couples might face while living on an ailing planet 84 years from now, and none of it is farfetched!” says Kimberly Frick-Welker, the play’s director.

“Launch Day” is the latest production in the award-winning Backstage Series produced by Cookeville Performing Arts Center (CPAC) and Cookeville's Leisure Services Department.

The show opens Jan. 19 at 7:30 p.m. at Cookeville Performing Arts Center. Production continues Jan. 20, 23, 25, 26, and 27 at 7: 30 p.m. and Jan. 21 at 2 p.m.

The play, which was written by Michael Higgins, only recently reached publication. In fact, “Launch Day” is so new that CPAC may be the first theatre to produce the published version of the play!

Frick-Welker was first introduced to the play while it was still awaiting publication. “Launch Day” was presented at the Southeastern Theatre Conference: Community Theatre Festival while Frick-Welker served as an adjudicator. It won Best Show at the event, and Frick-Welker was immediately determined to attain the production rights.

“I knew it would be a perfect fit for our Backstage Series at CPAC,” says Frick-Welker. “I am confident audiences will enjoy the play’s comedic approach to serious topics, and we have an amazing cast of actors to bring this show to life!”

Tickets For “Launch Day” are currently available online at www.cpactn.com and at the CPAC box office. The production is suitable for adults and teens. The play’s run time is just under 2 hours and includes one intermission. For more information about “Launch Day,” call the CPAC box office at 931-528-1313.
