Paving PR img 3

COOKEVILLE, TN – October 10. 2025 – The City of Cookeville will begin resurfacing several streets next week, continuing a multi-year effort to improve roadway conditions across the community. Milling is set to begin Friday, October 17th, 2025 on S. Cedar Avenue and the W. Spring Street intersection.  The milling crew will then move to S. Walnut Avenue from W. Spring Street to W. Jackson Street on Monday, October 20th, 2025.  After milling is complete, the paving crew will move in to repave these areas during the week of October 20, 2025.

The Public Works Department will begin prep work within the S. Cedar Avenue and W. Spring Street intersection area on Monday, October 13, 2025, in preparation for the resurfacing.

Starting Monday October 13, 2025, until all preparation work, milling, and paving is complete lane closures and flaggers should be expected. Our goal is to always keep at least one lane of travel open; however, no on-street parking will be available until the work is complete.   Motorists are encouraged to seek alternate routes.

Over the past three fiscal years, Cookeville has invested approximately $5.5 million in resurfacing city streets. For the current fiscal year, which runs through June 2026, the City has budgeted $1.8 million to cover both the fall paving program and a second round scheduled for spring 2026.

This round of street resurfacing includes approximately 1.1 miles of streets across several priority areas:

  • S. Cedar Avenue, at the E. Spring Street junction
  • S. Walnut Avenue, from W. Jackson Street to W. Spring Street
  • S. Madison Avenue, from E. Broad Street to the dead end
  • Reagan Avenue, from S. Lowe Avenue to S. Dixie Avenue
  • S. Dixie Avenue, from E. Spring Street to the Gabe’s parking lot

“South Walnut Avenue is our top priority,” said City Manager James Mills. “Significant utility work has left this roadway heavily patched, and we’re eager to restore a smooth, safe driving surface. Likewise, resurfacing South Cedar Avenue will greatly improve one of the primary entry points into Cookeville’s downtown.”

As part of the broader Walnut/Spring Street improvement project, work is currently underway on the S. Walnut Avenue parking area behind Gene’s Pizza.

Street resurfacing will be carried out by Vulcan Materials Company. In the event of adverse weather, the resurfacing list and schedule may be altered, with some street resurfacing possibly being delayed until spring 2026.

Pending completion of a Water Quality Control project, the City may also extend resurfacing on Walnut Avenue from W. Jackson Street south to Interstate Drive. If not completed this season, that segment will be a top priority for spring 2026.
