Cookeville City Manager James Mills announced today that Chad McDonald has been designated as the next Director of the Cookeville Department of Leisure Services & Public Facilities. He will assume the role upon the retirement of current Director Rick Woods, whose last day of employment will be October 3, 2025.
Mr. McDonald has served the City of Cookeville in various capacities for more than 30 years. He began as a part-time employee at the Cookeville Drama Center (now the Cookeville Performing Arts Center) in 1992 while attending Tennessee Tech University. In 1996, he accepted a full-time position with Leisure Services and has since held the roles of Cultural Arts Technician, Cultural Arts Coordinator, Cultural Arts Superintendent, and, most recently, Assistant Director since February 2024.
In announcing the appointment, City Manager Mills stated:
“The replacement of a Department Director is always a difficult decision, especially when replacing one with such a long tenure and extensive knowledge. Chad is very capable of the duties of the department and certainly possesses the experience to excel. His leadership is evident by the work he has accomplished in the department over nearly 30 years.”
Mr. McDonald expressed his gratitude for the opportunity:
“I appreciate the City Manager’s confidence in me and look forward to working with Rick Woods through this transition. My goal is to continue the efficiency of the department while serving the citizens of Cookeville. I am humbled and honored to step into this new role for the City of Cookeville. I am thankful to Rick Woods who has always been a great leader and mentor, and I look forward to continuing his work to serve the community by creating new opportunities for recreation, connection, and growth. I love Cookeville and I’m proud of what Leisure Services employees contribute to making the good life better for our citizens every day.”
A native of Harriman, Tennessee, McDonald moved to Cookeville in 1991 to attend Tennessee Tech. In addition to his professional service, he has been active in numerous community organizations, serving as President of the Tennessee Theatre Association, the Cookeville Arts Council, and the Rotary Club of Cookeville. He and his wife, Sarah, a retired Putnam County teacher, are active members of First United Methodist Church. They have two grown children, one grandchild, and enjoy traveling, spending time with family, and participating in the many parks, performances, and events that Cookeville offers.
The City of Cookeville thanks Rick Woods for his decades of dedicated leadership and service and looks forward to this new chapter under Chad McDonald’s direction.
