The City of Cookeville's longtime Finance Director, Brenda Imel, will officially retire on June 27, 2025. Her retirement ends a remarkable career in public service that has spanned over two decades.
Brenda Imel began her tenure with the City in 2003, initially serving as Assistant Finance Director. In July 2015, she was promoted to Finance Director, a role in which she continued to lead the department with professionalism, insight, and steadfast dedication. With over 25 years of experience in public accounting, including work in audit and financial reporting, Imel brought both skill and vision to the City’s financial operations.
“My career at the City has been very rewarding,” said Imel. “I’ve had the opportunity to see many progressive changes in the Finance Department. I am proud of the work that has been accomplished and the staff who have worked diligently with me to see these improvements come to fruition.”
During her time as Finance Director, Imel helped guide the City through numerous financial milestones. She played a key role in budget development, long-term planning, and financial analysis. Throughout it all, Imel always demonstrated a strong commitment to fiscal responsibility and public trust.
At her retirement announcement, City Manager James Mills shared his gratitude. “I appreciate all Brenda has done for our City,” said Mills. “She has been a true asset to all of us. While we hate to lose a staff member of her tenure, her retirement is well deserved. I wish her all the best and thank her for a job well done.”
The City Council recently passed a resolution honoring Imel for her service, noting her integrity, leadership, and commitment to the citizens of Cookeville.
In addition to her role with the City, Imel holds a Bachelor of Science in Accounting, is a Certified Public Accountant, and has been an active member of several professional organizations including the Tennessee Society of Certified Public Accountants, the Tennessee Government Finance Officers Association, and the Government Finance Officers Association.
Her retirement marks the end of a career filled with dedication and hard work. She leaves behind a legacy of excellence, integrity, and respect among colleagues and the community.
The City of Cookeville thanks Imel for her many years of service and wish her a retirement filled with happiness, good health, and new adventures.
Upon Imel’s retirement, the City’s Finance Department will be led by Jenni Nisewander, formerly the City’s Assistant Finance Director. She and Imel have collaborated closely over the past four months to ensure a seamless transition for the department.
